Sonographers should be credentialed in the specialty areas in which they practice, to maintain the highest level of quality assurance and patient safety. Although a sonographer may play a critical role in extracting the information essential to formulating a diagnosis, the interpretation of the ultrasound and rendering of a diagnosis is considered the practice of medicine and the responsibility of the supervising licensed medical provider. All diagnostic ultrasound providers should follow the AIUM’s accreditation policies that support this recommendation.
