This 12-hour course takes place over 2 days and covers the 6 major joints in musculoskeletal ultrasound through lectures, live demos, and participant scanning time with a 4-to-1 attendee-to-faculty ratio. Online attendees participate via live demos.

Learn the fundamentals of MSK ultrasound using the latest ultrasound equipment on live volunteer models supervised by expert instructors.

Course Overview

The course covers anatomy of the extremities, the normal appearance of tendons, ligaments, nerves, and muscles on ultrasound and common pathology of these structures seen with ultrasound. Instruction includes hands-on scanning protocols and techniques. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

Identify the normal sonographic appearance of muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot.
Recognize sonographic features of common pathology involving the joints studied.

List practical scanning tips and pitfalls encountered in sonographic assessment of joints.

This course is designed for radiologists, sonographers, and health care providers in fields related to the musculoskeletal system or those who perform ultrasound or want to learn ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system.

Sandra J. Allison, MD, is a Board-Certified Diagnostic Radiologist and the Director of Ultrasound for Washington Radiology, practicing in the Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia area. Dr. Allison specializes in Ultrasound with areas of expertise in musculoskeletal, gynecologic, and vascular imaging. She currently holds an Associate Professor of Radiology appointment at Georgetown University School of Medicine where she previously served as Radiology Residency Program Director and Chief of Ultrasound. Dr. Allison is a national and international invited lecturer and is active in many professional organizations. She is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. Dr. Allison completed her diagnostic radiology residency and fellowship in Ultrasound, CT, and MRI at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Jon A. Jacobson, MD, FACR, FAIUM is a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist. His educational background includes radiology residency at Henry Ford Hospital and musculoskeletal fellowship at the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Jacobson is a Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Michigan, where his research interests include musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI. His academic achievements include over 260 peer-reviewed publications and many invited national and international lectures or workshops. Dr. Jacobson has been a visiting professor on over 50 occasions, is past-President of the Society of Skeletal Radiology, and has received numerous teaching and mentoring awards, including the 2023 Distinguished Educator Award (American Roentgen Ray Society). He is also the author of the textbook “Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound,” which has been translated into 5 languages with its fourth edition now in publication.

Levon N. Nazarian, MD, FAIUM, FACR, has co-authored 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 100 abstracts on topics including the use of ultrasound to diagnose and guide innovative treatments for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. From 2011–2018 he was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. In 2017, he was awarded the Joseph H. Holmes Clinical Pioneer Award by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, a society for which he is Immediate Past President. Dr Nazarian joined the radiology faculty at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in January 2023.

Dr. Humberto Rosas is a nationally recognized musculoskeletal radiologist with expertise in diagnostic and interventional imaging. He has served as Clinical Director of Radiology at East Madison Hospital, Director of the Musculoskeletal Interventional Service at the University of Wisconsin, and Chair of the Musculoskeletal Community for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
A graduate of Stanford University and Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Rosas completed his residency and fellowship at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, delivered over 200 national and international presentations, and received multiple honors, including the Innovation Award for Biotechnology, RSNA Magna Cum Laude Award, and Teacher of the Year.
An innovator at heart, Dr. Rosas holds several patents in ultrasound-based respiratory monitoring and is the co-founder of AyrFlo Innovation Labs, a medtech company developing non-invasive airway monitoring solutions. Outside of medicine, he enjoys mountain biking, cooking, reading, traveling, and creating 3D designs.

In 2008, Ms. Waters was chosen to train under Dr. Nazarian to learn MSK ultrasound. She became a full-time musculoskeletal ultrasound technologist in 2014 at the University of Pennsylvania. She was given a promotion in 2021 and became musculoskeletal ultrasound extender. In this role, Ms. Waters dictates the cases of other technologies and her own. She oversees the education and scans of other MSK technologisttechnologists.
