Interplay of Genetics and the Fetal Heart: Different Problems, Different Perspectives

This session will address the current role of echocardiography in the evaluation of patients with known or suspected aneuploidy and other common genetic conditions. On completion of this session, participants should be able to: (1) describe how echocardiography is currently used in the evaluation for aneuploidy and the role of cardiac and noncardiac “soft markers” from the perspective of the sonologist and the echocardiographer; (2) identify targets for genetic testing based on a cardiac anomaly diagnosis; and (3) be aware of controversial and unclear aspects of this area in prenatal diagnostics.
