Meet-the-Professor (MTP) Sessions
Meet-the-Professor sessions will not include food.

Friday, April 3, 2009
8:00 am-9:00 am
FA1 Medicolegal: Ectopic Issues SOLD OUT
James Shwayder, MD
This session will discuss medicolegal issues related to ectopic pregnancies, including medical treatment and wrongful birth.
FA2 Ultrasound Contrast Agents: Benefits Versus Risks? SOLD OUT
J. Brian Fowlkes, PhD
This session will provide an opportunity to discuss issues surrounding ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) and potential for bioeffects associated with their use. Many commercial UCAs use microbubbles to enhance ultrasound imaging. US Food and Drug Administration-approved agents are already providing relevant diagnostic data for cardiac applications in the United States and for noncardiac diagnoses throughout the rest of the world without the use of ionizing radiation. Because it is known that under appropriate conditions gas bubbles can undergo cavitation, there is obvious interest in understanding whether UCA use could potentially pose any risk to patients. As with any diagnostic imaging procedure, the benefits and risks must be weighed; therefore, understanding relative risks on balance with the known clinical utility is essential to appropriate patient care. At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to discuss the possible sources of bioeffects associated with UCAs, how the conditions in ultrasound imaging relate to the potential for bioeffects, and the relationship of the risks to those of other imaging modalities.
FA3 Male Genitalia Ultrasound SOLD OUT
Paul Sidhu, BSc, MRCP, FRCR
Following the session, participants will be able to confidently examine scrotal contents, with confident identification of common abnormalities, and be able to recognize unusual normal variants and rarer abnormal findings. Characterization of testicular masses, the significance of microlithiasis, and the role of Doppler in diagnosis of testicular torsion will be discussed. Participants will also be able to perform a standard dynamic pharmacologically stimulated erectile study and be able to identify common focal abnormalities of the penis.
FA4 Nongynecologic Pelvic Findings SOLD OUT
Anna Parsons, MD
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to recognize and learn the palpatory test for sigmoid diverticuli as a source of pelvic discomfort, recognize odd pelvic cysts, such as peritoneal cysts (loculated fluid-filled adhesions), lymphoceles, urachal cysts, and ectopic ureters, and recognize odd pelvic solid masses, such as splenosis, pancreatic pseudocysts that have fallen into the pelvis, and pelvic kidneys.
Saturday, April 4, 2009
6:45 am-7:45 am
SATA1 Thoracic Emergencies in Critical Care SOLD OUT
Christopher Moore, MD
The objective of this session is to discuss ultrasound as part of a comprehensive evaluation of chest trauma in the emergency department, to discuss and compare the utility of transthoracic echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography in the evaluation of possible thoracic dissection, and to discuss the sensitivity of ultrasound in the detection of pleural fluid in comparison to chest radiography.
SATA2 Renal Doppler Ultrasound: What It's Good For, What It's Not SOLD OUT
Mark Lockhart, MD, MPH
This session will describe and discuss the application of renal Doppler ultrasound in native and transplanted kidneys. The strengths and limitations of the technique will also be addressed.
SATA3 Sonography in Acute Pelvic Pain SOLD OUT
Rochelle Andreotti, MD
This session will help participants become familiar with the sonographic and computed tomographic findings that may be used to differentiate medically managed etiologies of acute pelvic pain from ovarian torsion, a surgical emergency, with the understanding that sonography is the imaging method of choice.
SATA4 Cervical Assessment: Evidence Based SOLD OUT
Michael House, MD
The objective of this session is to discuss cervical assessment with regard to sonographic evaluation and preterm delivery.
Saturday, April 4, 2009
12:15 pm-1:15 pm
SATP1 Optimizing the Doppler Examination SOLD OUT
M. Robert De Jong, RDCS, RDMS, RVT, and Phillip Bendick, PhD
At the end of this session, participants will have the skills to improve the gray scale, color Doppler, and spectral Doppler aspects of the Doppler examination. Participants will have an understanding of the various controls needed to optimize the gray scale image and Doppler information as well as tips and techniques to obtain a diagnostic examination on technically challenging patients. This course is intended for both physicians and sonographers.
SATP2 Confirmation of Normal Fetal Heart Anatomy SOLD OUT
Mark Sklansky, MD
Prenatal screening for congenital heart disease remains challenging. Most cases of congenital heart disease continue to be missed with routine prenatal screening. Those who screen the fetus for congenital heart disease may feel overwhelmed and insecure in their ability to differentiate normal from abnormal. The objective of this session is to teach the basics of prenatal screening for congenital heart disease, including many pearls, drawn from many years of experience scanning normal and abnormal hearts, both prenatally and postnatally. The session aims to improve the ability of those in attendance to detect congenital heart disease prenatally.
SATP3 Challenging Fetal Brain Issues: Posterior Fossa and Ventriculomegaly SOLD OUT
Yaron Zalel, MD
The objective of this session is to discuss the clinical significance of evaluating posterior fossa abnormal-ities and ventriculomegaly.
SATP4 Sports-Related Hip Disorders SOLD OUT
Marnix van Holsbeeck, MD
The objective of the session is to review common sports-related hip disorders, such as muscle, tendon, and joint abnormalities.
Sunday, April 5, 2009
7:00 am-8:00 am
SUNA1 Preoperative Duplex Ultrasound Arterial Mapping
Natalie Marks, MD
The objective of this session is to describe duplex arterial mapping as a powerful, unique, and accurate imaging technique for assessment of ischemic lower extremities before revascularization procedures.
SUNA2 Sonography of the Appendix and Abdominal Wall Hernias SOLD OUT
Cindy Rapp, BS, RDMS
Sonography plays a vital role in noninvasive evaluation of patients with right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain. Sonography can differentiate appendicitis and hernias from other etiologies of pelvic pain. Successful demonstration of a normal-sized appendix virtually excludes appendicitis in the patient with RLQ pain. The first portion of this session will cover how to find the normal appendix with sonography. Abdominal wall hernias are a common clinical problem. Sonography is an accurate means of identifying abdominal wall hernias when the clinical diagnosis is uncertain. We will also discuss how to identify inguinal, femoral, and spigelian hernias. On completion of this session, participants will be able to identify the sonographic landmarks for locating the appendix, list the various locations of abdominal wall hernias, and recognize the contents of abdominal wall hernias.
SUNA3 Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Imaging of Uterine Fibroids SOLD OUT
Douglas L. Brown, MD
After this session, participants will understand common and uncommon sonographic features of uterine fibroids, the appearance of fibroids by computed tomographic, positron emission tomographic, and magnetic resonance scanning, and limitations in the diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma. The role of imaging in evaluating patients for uterine fibroid embolization and focused ultrasound ablation of fibroids will also be discussed.
SUNA4 Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound-Applications From Fetal Life to Brain Death SOLD OUT
Dorothy Bulas, MD
Following this session, the participant should be able to describe the numerous applications for transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, including middle cerebral artery velocities for fetal anemia, neonatal resistive indices for hydrocephalus and asphyxia, and the TCD protocol for sickle cell disease. The use of TCD ultrasound for vasospasm, trauma, and brain death will also be discussed.
