Committees
Annual Convention Committee
The Annual Convention Committee (ACC) establishes and, in association with the office staff, organizes and conducts effective scientific and educational meetings. All videotape material from the convention is evaluated by the ACC. The ACC also works together with the Continuing Medical Education Committee to develop convention programs that meet the scientific, educational and professional needs of the AIUM membership.

Bioeffects Committee
The purpose of the Bioeffects Committee is to provide information to the AIUM membership on matters relating to the biological effects of ultrasound, especially when these matters relate to the safety of clinical ultrasound. A primary responsibility is to evaluate research reports on biological effects.

In addition to the members appointed by the AIUM President, composition of this committee includes individuals that serve as resource members from Federal Agencies and other external organizations.

Clinical Standards Committee
Clinical Standards Committee (CSC) is charged with responsibility for any videotapes of the standards or other materials directly related to the standards and with producing technical bulletins. The CSC has a close working relationship with the Technical Standards Committee and the Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council, but does not need direct contact with the CME Committee. The CSC should have a liaison to the Technical Standards Committee and the Technical Standards Committee should have a liaison to the CSC.

Constitution Committee
The Constitution Committee bears responsibility for resolving internal contradictions in the AIUM Constitution and any apparent contradictions between policies expressed in the Constitution and proposed practices.

Continuing Medical Education Committee
The CME Committee develops the policies and procedures for the review and approval of AMA Category I continuing medical education credit. The committee is responsible for maintaining the procedures and records as required by the ACCME to insure retention of this privilege and authority.

Council on Sections
The Council on Sections is composed of the chairpersons of AIUM's formally recognized sections. A section includes every member with a particular interest or expertise in a specific medical ultrasound application or research area. The section's purposes are:
  1. to determine the scientific and professional concerns in education, legislation, research and instrumentation of the specific discipline as they apply to ultrasound, and to make these concerns known to the AIUM;
  2. to determine the significance and relevance to the section's application area(s) of research results and developments in other specialty areas, and to convey this information to others in the field;
  3. to stimulate research and solicit paper submissions for AIUM meetings;
  4. to assist in promotion of AIUM meetings and membership within the specific application;
  5. to maintain liaison with the college to which most section members may belong;
  6. to review proposals for official AIUM statements and policies to ensure that they are impartial, scientifically accurate, and in the best interest of the profession as a whole.
Editorial Board of The Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine
The Editorial Board bears the responsibility for preparing, in a timely manner, the editorial content of the official journal for the AIUM, the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. The Board encourages member participation and readership by producing a publication of the highest possible scientific quality.

Endowment for Education and Research Committee
The Endowment for Education and Research Committee has been designed to oversee the execution of all elements of the Endowment for Education and Research. This fund has been designed to promulgate the impact and importance of ultrasound in medical diagnosis and patient management by promoting education and establishing research opportunities in ultrasound. This fund will grant money for research and education in the following areas:
  1. Teaching*
  2. Clinical Ultrasound Research
    1. Obstetric/Gynecologic
    2. Non-Obstetric/Gynecologic
  3. Basic Science Ultrasound Research
* Grants for teaching must result in the development of methods that can be utilized by individuals/institutions other than those that are being funded. The AIUM will not fund grants to teach a specific population in a single university/hospital.

Exhibit Advisory Council
The purpose of the Exhibit Advisory Council is to communicate to the AIUM all aspects of exhibit policies and procedures. The council provides two-way communication between the exhibitors and the AIUM.

Finance Committee
The purpose of the AIUM Finance Committee is to review details of the annual budget, financial statements, and investments and submit recommendations to the Executive Committee and Board of Governors for approval.

Membership Committee
The goal of the Membership Committee is to increase membership in the AIUM through implementation of recruitment and retention activities. Its duties include oversight of the Fellow and Senior member elevation process, providing input for membership recruitment and retention, and making membership related recommendations to the Board of Governors.

Public Education and Resource Committee
The Public Education and Resource Committee is charged with creating appropriate patient brochures, official statements dealing with patient issues, and other resources for patient education.

Postgraduate Course Committee
The Postgraduate Course Committee establishes and, in association with the office staff, organizes and conducts effective freestanding scientific and educational meetings. The Postgraduate Course Committee also works together with the Continuing Medical Education Committee to develop educational programs that meet the scientific, educational and professional needs of the AIUM membership.

Technical Standards Committee
The Technical Standards Committee was formed during the late 1960's for the purpose of developing, where appropriate, standardized approaches to instrument performance measurements and other aspects of medical ultrasound, including presentation and labeling, phantoms, and nomenclature. The Technical Standards Committee provides reviews of documents, manuals, and standards produced by other organizations, government bodies, and individuals, especially as these documents relate to the physics, engineering, performance testing, and clinical use of ultrasound equipment.

The Technical Standards Committee maintains liaison with other organizations developing standards for ultrasound equipment, including NEMA, International Electrotechnical Commission, Acoustical Society of America and the FDA.
